An Ideal Christmas Present!
A new and exciting book celebrating the humble apple
“a unique combination of an historical overview of Cider Making through the ages,
the cider making process and
a collection of recipes using cider and cider apples”'
Cider (or cyder) refers to an alscohlic beverage that is primarily made from the fermented juices of specially grown apple varieties. Although popular in France, Ireland, Northern Spain and the Americas (where it is known as Ciderjack), with a production in excess of 150 million gallons of cider per year, the United Kingdom is by far the largest cider manufacturing country in the world.
In the past, cider has suffered a bit from an image problem and is often seen, along with Alcopops etc, as the drink of choice for teenagers owing to its low cost and high alcoholic content (e.g. over 5%) compared to beer. In recent years, however, there has been a significant increase in cider sales in the UK.
Most of this increased success is due to the modern cider manufacturers' marketing strategy which is aimed at getting rid of the rather traditional and parochial image that is often associated with cider drinking and making cider a more up-market beverage with greater appeal to the more sophisticated end of the market.Ray and Claire created this book after being inspired to find new and interesting ways to make the most of the harvest of wonderful apples from their garden. They created a huge catalogue of ideas, some traditional family favourites and some recipes with a more modern twist but in the process also became interested in the history and the process of making cider.The book is split into three clear sections, an historical overview, the cider making process and the recipes.1. The historical overview explores not only when and where cider became popular, but also the different varieties of apples (with strange sounding names such as "Handsome Maud's”, “Morgan's Sweet”, “Royal Wilding”, “Slack My Girdle"!) that are used to make the best beverage, the tradition of Wassail and, not forgetting, Scrumpy.
2. Based on the traditional process still employed by cider makers today, the second section follows the cider making process from the trees to the barrel at Devon's own Winkleigh Cider Company.3. The main part of the book (i.e. the cookbook) spans recipes using cider and apples from Soups to Sweets from Pies to Preserves and includes such tempting ideas as “Onion and Cider Soup”; “Salmon and Oats in a Cider Sauce”; “Ham in Cider”, “Scrumpy Pheasant”; “Cider scalloped potatoes”, “Apple Strudel”; “Apple and Red Chilli Chutney”; “Tangy BBQ Sauce”, “Witches cauldron”if you would like to see the full index and/or example of some of these recipes, please drop us an e-mail at cyder@herne.org.uk ).

Wiring Regulations in Brief (First Edition) by Ray Tricker |
|||
This essential reference will prove an invaluable guide for anyone based in the electrical industry working on electrical systems (design, installation, inspection and testing), who requires a comprehensive source of information on the specific requirements of the IEE Wiring Regulations (published by the IET), without having to trawl through the lengthy, complicated coverage of the Regulations themselves.
Unlike the majority of texts available on the subject of the IEE Wiring Regulations, which explain how adherence to the Regulations is achieved in working practice, Ray Tricker presents the specifics of the actual regulatory Standard itself in his renowned, easily accessible, and informal writing style.
Wiring Regulations in Brief presents the IEE Wiring Regulations with a unique topic-based approach. Unlike the Regulations themselves, related topics are linked – areas such as inspection and testing are presented together in one section. This provides the reader with an exceptionally quick source of reference on all aspects of the Regulations as they relate to a specific area of working practice, which maximises easy identification of practical problems, and Regulations compliance.
Part P, which brings domestic
electrical installations under Building Regulations control as of 2005,
is also covered in detail, to highlight the requirement that any person
who carries out domestic electrical installation work, is now legally
required to demonstrate their competence in their area of work.
